New club, Woke, creates positive atmosphere

Students created a new club called Woke which is working toward creating a more positive atmosphere within the school community.
“Woke is a group started by students to raise awareness issues of diversity and civil discourse. We need to appreciate our differences and talk about controversial issues without the situation getting out of hand,” said sponsor and social studies department chair Chris Kubic.
Students decided to get involved with the club because they wanted to encourage people in the school to treat others with more compassion.
“I am so incredibly passionate about activism in social justice. I cannot handle other humans being treated and getting along better than others due to differences that should be embraced,” said senior Lauren Mateling.
Although some of the students will be graduating this year, they want to create a change for future classes.
“My biggest goal for this club is to see more acceptance and understanding as I leave this school. All I want is for everyone to feel safe when they are here for their education,” Mateling said.
Even though the club is just getting started, they have already put in a lot of work toward reaching their goals.
“Members have made a school-wide announcement about unity in diversity and what we stand for as Knights. They have presented to faculty members about students’ experiences and how to help promote civil discussions. They had a booth at the Wellness Fair and presented to freshman transition classes,” Kubic said.
Any students who want to get involved can text “@woke1617” to 81010 to be alerted of upcoming meeting dates and events.
