What the Cubs win means for students, families

The Chicago Cubs have won a World Series for the first time in 108 years. This is a huge part of Chicago sports history and means a lot to many fans who have waited their whole lives to see this.

The Cubs won the World Series after getting into the postseason after finishing 103-58, and winning a series against the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Cleveland Indians.

They won the series against San Francisco 3 games to 1 after a 4 run rally in the ninth inning to win 6-5, on a double by Ben Zobrist that scored 1 run, a 2 run single by Wilson Contreras that tied the game, and an RBI single by Javier Baez.

“That was a big comeback, then we didn’t have to go to an elimination game. But they did that all season, comebacks late, it was great having them carry that into the postseason,” said science teacher Kevin Horwitz.

The Cubs then went on to play the Los Angeles Dodgers and would win the series 4 games to 2, with Addison Russell and Anthony Rizzo coming out of big slumps.

“That was huge. Russell got adjustments towards his swing, and if the Cubs wanted to win it had to have been Rizzo hitting for them,” Horwitz said.

The Cubs then went onto playing the Cleveland Indians with a big surprise slugger Kyle Schwarber came back after tearing two of his knee ligaments earlier in the season.

“I never thought he would play. I thought their was no chance he would make the roster. I’m glad he did, cause he did great,” Horwitz said.

The Cubs had trouble in the series they were facing a 3 games to 1 deficit, leaving a lot of fans nervous. Because not many teams come back from that kind of series deficit.

“I was not confident at all, but I kept telling my husband that if any team could do it, it would be this Cubs team,” said math teacher Kim Johnson.

The Cubs battled back winning game 5, 3-2, then going back to Cleveland for game 6, they would win after scoring 9 runs, with Addison Russell hitting a huge Grand Slam.

“Russell is my favorite player. That was great watching the grand slam. He worked the count and got his pitch,” Horwitz said.

The Cubs then played in a dramatic game 7 in Cleveland.

“I was watching at my cousin’s house. We were all hugging and high fiving, I even wore my lucky shirt that I wore for the other games that they won,” said activities director Molly Tomlinson.

The Cubs would give up 3 runs in the 8th inning to force it to extra innings. Then a rain delay came and delayed the game.

“The rain delay stressed me out a lot and made it more interesting,” Tomlinson said.

The Cubs would take the lead after Ben Zobrist doubled that led to a run scoring and Miguel Montero getting an RBI single.

The Cubs then went on to win after Kris Bryant threw the ball to Anthony Rizzo for the final out.

I was in my living room, and I stayed up for at least an hour celebrating after that,” Johnson said.

“It was magical, amazing, and exciting to watch it be finally over,” Tomlinson said.

It was the first time for anyone seeing the Cubs win the World Series, many have very happy relatives who waited a long time.

“My dad waited 64 years and he is a huge Cubs fan so, I was happy for him,” Johnson said.

“My dad waited 74 years. He was 3 when the Cubs played in a World Series in 1945, He’s been a Cubs fan his whole life so it meant a lot to him,” Horwitz said.

After the Cubs got the big win, they had a parade on Friday the November 4th, “I was at the parade by Wrigley Field celebrating. It was special being down there in that atmosphere,” Tomlinson said.
