Becca’s Beat

A wise person once told me that it was impossible to use Types A, B and C to categorize people (http://www.psych.uncc.edu/). Since then, I have often wondered if seven billion people can be categorized into the categories of Type A, Type B and Type C. Is it truly possible to place such a large and diverse population on such a narrow spectrum? I really don’t know.
If I were to categorize myself, I would say I’m relatively balanced between Type A and Type C, otherwise known as Type B. The common Type A, the person who rushes around all the time, can’t sit still, feels constant stress, is true of me sometimes. For example, people may say I’m Type A because I work hard, overachieve, plan for my future, am organized, have high expectations and I despise procrastinating. But, at the same time, I am also laid back. Deadlines for newspaper don’t get to me like they do everyone else. If I’m late to something, nine times out of ten I can be heard saying “better late than never.” I don’t study my life away or worry about every little thing that crosses my path. Although it depends on the situation, I am relatively balanced between letting stress get to me and taking a step back and just letting things go.
I recently took a personality test which confirmed my results: I am Type B because I am balanced between Type A and Type C. As a matter of fact, I was 51% Type A, and 49% Type C—though if you asked my mother what she thought about this she would probably say I’m bound to be more Type A than that because she often sees the worst of my stress.
After analyzing my results, I really began to wonder if it was possible to indicate my personality by a simple letter. Could saying I’m “Type B” really define to others who I am as a person? Am I more than a letter that is universally recognized? I suppose it’s a question that is up to a person to determine on their own. It really depends on what you believe. And it all comes down to whether or not you believe you can be categorized as one of three (or sometimes even just two letters when only Types A and B are considered) personality types.
Now, while the Type A will keep this question nagging at me, the Type C will forget about it until the topic comes up again. Such as life being such a balance and being called Type B.
