Neon’s new thrilling, mysterious, and oddball film Longlegs hit theaters around the globe this summer, sparking an interest in teens and adults alike. The title may be humorous and unexpecting from most, but behind that underlies a psychological horror story that boggles viewers throughout the eternity of the film.
Directed by Osgood “Oz” Perkins, Longlegs debuted July 12th, 2024. Set in Oregon during the 1990’s, Agent Lee Harker, played by Maika Monroe, delivers a believable role as a female FBI agent, who is striving to capture the Longlegs killer. Longlegs, who is played by Nicolas Cage, is the clear star of this movie. Whether you’ve mocked him or praised him for his movies in the past, there is no question that Cage hit a home run with his performance in this film.
Cage’s performance as Longlegs was skillfully casted, yet disturbing and unnerving. “Something that made me uncomfortable was when he was driving in his car screaming,” said senior Sofia Conejo.
The composition of the film’s editing and cinematography was extraordinary, capturing the decade and the mood of the story.
“I liked the jump scares in the movie,” GNHS senior Nereida Alanis said. “I always like when my body moves to jump scares.”
Landing a solid 86% on the official Rotten Tomatoes meter, Longlegs is guaranteed to frighten audiences due to its unpredictability and mystery. Every twist and turn is equivalent to a rollercoaster ride, a dark rabbit hole of evil which only becomes deeper and deeper with each sequence.
I have never seen a movie quite like Longlegs. It fulfills the horror genre without having excessive blood and cheap thrills for shock value. True horror is the psychological depravity of what this film offers, which is why I give this film a 4 ½ out of 5 stars. From Nicolas Cage’s terrifying performance, to Osgood Perkins excellent directing and filmmaking, Longlegs is one of 2024’s scariest films.
