The girls bowling team is currently wrapping up their season, one in which they focused on rebuilding and setting new goals.
The team says that although they fell short of some of their goals, they still take pride in the process they have made and the many successes they did have. New goals were set as the team worked on rebuilding for the future.
“Our goals were to be in the top half of the conference and to qualify for Sectionals. We may have fallen short of that goal, but we continued to improve throughout the season. Success can be measured in many different ways, and I think we had a successful season,” head coach Laura Bertermann said.
Junior Sydney Swiercz set her goals early in the season. She wanted to make it past Sectionals, which she was able to do. She attended Sectionals as an individual bowler on February 9 in Hoffman Estates.
“My goals this year was to make it past Regionals, and I have achieved that goal,” Swiercz said.
Senior Emily Mack was the captain of the team this season. She has been bowling on the team since her freshman year.
“This year was definitely a rebuilding year but a great one at that. The freshmen this year have truly grown in the skills, and the team as a whole progressed greatly from the beginning to the end,” Mack said.
The team competed at several matches this season. A typical bowling match consists of three games. Splitting into teams of five, the girls compete to have the highest number of points between all other teams. Most of their meets were played against the other six conference schools, but some Saturday tournaments had upwards of 32 teams in them.
“My favorite part of being on the bowling team is getting to know other girls, learning how to bowl and just bowling for fun,” Swiercz said.
Head coach Laura Bertermann has been coaching bowling for 25 years. She started coaching at North eleven years ago. Her favorite part of her job is working with the students outside of the classroom.
“I really enjoy the relationships I develop with my bowlers. The relationships are second to none,” Bertermann said.
