The Snapchat Update

Arguably one of the most talked about social media topics of 2018 so far is the Snapchat update that has caused discussion amongst users of the app. According to Snapchat, the redesign was for users to be able to find friends easier, to avoid constant scrolling.
“I saw many tweets and Instagram posts about the update. I was surprised, and I did not like it right away. I was dreading the incoming update on my phone,” said junior Sara Allen.
The update came in early February, and many users are still opposed to it, citing that it is difficult to use. Snapchat’s new algorithm is adaptive, which means it takes time to figure out who you talk to the most.
“I still use Snapchat every day, but I get too lazy to do streaks in the morning because it’s confusing,” said junior Marisa Medina.
Those who dislike the most recent update have not just sat back and waited. A petition started by Nic Rumsey opposing the new update currently has over 1.2 million supporters.
“We hear you and appreciate that you took the time to let us know how you feel. We completely understand the new Snapchat has felt uncomfortable for many,” Snapchat said in response to the petition.
Snapchat has lost over 1 billion dollars in revenue in response to many users simply quitting use of the app.
“They deserve to lose money. So many people have complained, and they have not listened to our wishes,” Allen said.
Snapchat has not shown signs of changing the update.
