Academic Team starts competition season

Academic Team has started their competition season and are currently undefeated. Academic Team answers trivia questions with a buzzer system. Anyone can join the team, but they prefer students who are academically inclined. Academic Team looks good on college applications. The varsity team is undefeated.

“We compete against high schools in our conference such as Lakes, Grant, etc,” said Academic Team coach Megan Stenberg.

Competitions are every Wednesday after school. The competitions are not mandatory to attend.

“Academic Team builds your knowledge and your other teammates’ knowledge also,” Stenberg said.

There are no requirements to be on the team, such as straight As or a high GPA. Many questions are asked, including history, math, literature, music, and science. The students on the team are asked questions, and when they know the answer, they tap a buzzer. The questions are challenging, so it helps to be prepared. There are only 12 students on the team, so they are looking for new members. Competitions are only once a week, so it does not require a huge time commitment.

“Academic Team looks good on college applications. It’s a fun way to gain knowledge. Academic Team is also a low commitment. We meet up once a week to practice. Starting in November we go to meets once a week,” said assistant coach Evie Amelio.

When one answer is correct, the team receives ten points. There are five members on a team.

“It’s a lot of fun. Sixteen questions are asked, and bonus points are available,” said Academic Team student Jacob Pritts. “Academic Team is fun because there’s new information to be learned.”
