Yearbook, newspaper students excel at conference

Journalism and Yearbook students had the opportunity to attend the Kettle Moraine Press Association, or KEMPA, fall conference at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater on October 13 in order to attend sessions on aspects newspaper and yearbook production. In the yearbook category The Knight’s Tale won first place, and in the newspaper competition The Knight Times took second.

KEMPA projected that 1000 to 900 students attended their sixty plus sessions each tailored to a specific journalism topic. Some sessions included Fake News and Ethical Journalism, Yearbook Trends, Television Production, and Covering Controversial Issues.

“I really enjoyed the session on controversial issues because it’s a hard topic to write about, and before I was never really sure how to approach those issues,” said senior Anne Mattea.

Many students take journalism throughout their high school career and have the opportunity to attend KEMPA multiple times without a large overlap because every year the content changes.

“This is my third year coming to KEMPA, and the great thing is you can come every year and not go to the same session twice. There are always new and interesting topics that relate to what’s happening in the world,” said junior Evan Garrett.

Students enjoy that the conference offers a way to stay updated with new ideas and protocol in journalism.

The conference also showcases the work of individual students from the previous year. Advisers send in their work, and it is judged against the work of other student journalists. Here are the results.
