Students improve leadership skills
Students from every sport and club were chosen by staff to attend the conference which was held at College of Lake County. All schools from the Northern Lake County Conference attended the event, including Grayslake North, Grayslake Central, Round Lake, Grant, Wauconda, Antioch, Lakes, and North Chicago.
During the conference, athletes and club members split into different classrooms where they participated in team bonding activities and held classroom discussions on what it meant to be a leader. Students were encouraged to blend with new people while in class.
“We all mixed together very well. We were with other people from different schools. The atmosphere was very accepting, and everyone was willing to talk to new people,” said sophomore Simone Woods.
Woods is currently in her second year as a varsity dancer. Her coach, Keeley Thode, nominated her to represent the dance team for North.
The goal of the NLCC Leadership Conference was to teach students how to be a respectful and responsible leader. It also shows coaches how to strengthen their bond with their team and how to encourage students to become involved in their school’s activities.
“Now a handful of people know how to have better leadership of their team. They come up with new ways to make our school a better place,” Woods said.
Athletes and club members from all seven high schools were hoped to have a new enlightenment on what it means to be a leader and how they could better represent their school in years to come.
“I was reminded on what great students we have at North. The whole event was so positive and uplifting. I wish more of our students could have participated,” said Nikki Kirchway, boys volleyball coach at North.
