Students prepare for day of silence

SAGA prepares for Day of Silence and Day of Dialogue on April 20 and 21, two days of activism for the LGBTQIA+ community and spreading awareness about how LGBTQIA+ people are silenced.
“The Day of Silence is a national event, usually run by students, that is used to symbolize how bullying often silences those students who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Often students choose to go the whole day without speaking to symbolize the silence that feels enforced upon gay and transgender students who sometimes fear coming out due to the harassment they might face if they do,” said SAGA sponsor Chris Fisherkeller.
Students can support the LGBTQIA+ students by choosing to be silent on Day of Silence or speaking out on Day of Dialogue.
“[Day of Silence is important because] it helps raise awareness for the LGBTQIA+ population and their struggles,” said sophomore Cypress Folk.
SAGA sets up a booth that people can interact with to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ population and the two days of activism. SAGA also sells buttons and gives ribbons to allow people to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
“The best part of Day of Silence is the support that the community provides every year… It just reinforces how much we as a community have grown in the acceptance of LGBTQIA+ students,” said SAGA sponsor Patrick Green.
