Coach Wood Retires

Coach Steve Wood has resigned as head varsity football coach after leading Grayslake North’s program from the very beginning.

Over the past ten years, there has been a familiar sight on the Grayslake North sideline, Mr. Steve Wood. Recently though, he has stepped down after leading the program for the last 12 years.

“I’m not sure one word [could sum up my coaching career at Grayslake North], but one word that comes to mind is proud. I am proud of the coaches, players, and school community for all the support and things we have been able to accomplish over the years,” Wood said.

When asked about why he chose to retired, Coach Wood unselfishly said, “I want to watch my kids compete in high school. They are both three-sport athletes and have supported me over the years. Now, it is my chance to support them.”

“I’m going to miss not having the ‘goatee’ around at practices anymore. When you think of Grayslake North football, you think of Steve Wood, so it will be weird without him. Most of all, though, I will miss the way he cares for all of us and how much he did for us on and off the field,” said senior Sam Nayyer.

Even though he is content with his decision, Coach Wood did state that he will miss the time spent with the team.

“I will miss the kids. I have developed so many great relationships that it will be hard letting that go. Also, nothing compares to the competition on Friday nights,” Wood said.

The bond shared between the players and Coach Wood was something special.

“I’m going to miss the relationship we had. Our relationship was unique, and I will probably miss that the most. He was a great coach, but an even better person,” said senior Payton Campbell.

As a proud father and husband, Wood’s Friday nights will still be spent under the lights in the fall, but spent watching his boys and spending more time with his family.

He will still serve as PE teacher and assist whomever the new head coach is as needed.

Despite Coach Wood retiring, he did say, “Upon [my kids’] graduation I will return to coaching, but not necessarily as the head coach.”
