The Chicago Cubs started the season going 26-4 through 30 games, becoming one of the 8 only teams to do that.

The Cubs also had a big setback to start the year when outfielder Kyle Schwarber, who hit 5 home runs in the postseason last year, tore his ACL in the 3rd game of this year in a collision with center fielder Dexter Fowler.

The Chicago Cubs sent 7 players to the all star game Dexter Fowler, Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell, Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta.

The Cubs added closer Aroldis Chapman in the middle of the season to strengthen their bullpen and added left handed Mike Montgomery.

The Chicago Cubs clinched playoff berth on September 15th, and ended with a record of 103-58 and opened up the postseason with a series against the San Francisco Giants.

In game one, Jon Lester pitched against Johnny Cueto and both went eight innings with no runs until second baseman Javier Baez hit a homerun and the Cubs won 1-0.

In game 2, Kyle Hendricks took the mound, the Cubs would win after Hendricks had 2 RBIs and reliever Travis Wood hit a solo home run in a 5-2 win.

The Cubs after losing game 3 in extra innings, came back from a 5-2 deficit in the 9th inning to win 6-5. After Ben Zobrist’s double that scored a run and singles by Wilson Contreras and Javier Baez scored 4 runs in the ninth inning.

The Cubs then played the Dodgers in the NLCS, with game 1 tied in the 8th inning and the bases loaded, Catcher Miguel Montero hit a pinch hit grand slam to lead the Cubs to a 8-4 win.

The Cubs in the next two games would be shut out losing 2 straight 1-0 in game 2 and 6-0 in game 3.

The Cubs in game 4 got a couple players out of big slumps, Anthony Rizzo, who was 2 for 26, used another teammates Matt Szczur bat, and had 3 hits and a home run. Addison Russell, who was also in a slump had 3 hits including a 2 run homerun. That gave the Cubs a 10-2 victory in game 4.

In game 5 Jon Lester pitched great giving up 1 run in 7 innings, with Addison russell hitting another home run, and Javier Baez hitting a double that scored 3 runs in the eighth inning to give the Cubs a 8-4 win.  

In game 6, Kyle Hendricks took the mound against one of the game’s best pitcher Clayton Kershaw. The Cubs struck early with 2 runs in the first, then later Wilson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo hit home runs that gave them a 5 run lead and a trip to the World Series, with co MVPs Javier Baez and Jon Lester.

The Cubs would lose game 1, but the lineup would include Kyle Schwarber playing for the first time since he tore 2 ligaments in his knee. He would double, but the Cubs lost 6-0.

In Game 2, the Cubs would come out hitting after being up 1-0 after Rizzo hit an RBI double. Then later in the game, Kyle Schwarber hit 2 RBI singles. The game ended in a 5-1 win while Jake Arrieta threw 5 ⅓ innings without giving up a hit getting his first win in the postseason.    

In game 3, of the first World Series at Wrigley Field in 71 years, the Cubs would be caught in a great pitching matchup, but the game ended in a 1-0 victory for Cleveland.

In game 4, John Lackey took the mound against Corey Kluber. The Cubs would lose their second straight game 8-2, putting the Cubs down 3 games to 1.

Game 5, the last game at Wrigley Field this year, would be a different story. With Jon Lester on the mound, the Cubs were down 1-0 till Kris Bryant hit a solo home run, followed up by an infield single by Addison Russell and a sac fly by 39 year old catcher David Ross to score 3 runs in that inning. The Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman would throw 2 ⅔ innings and shut down the Indians to have the Cubs win 3-2.

Game 6, was back in Cleveland, and the Cubs had Jake Arrieta pitching again. The Cubs would score early with a solo home run by Kris Bryant to start off, then after the Cleveland outfielders misplayed a pop fly hit by Addison Russell that let 2 runs score. Russell would later in the 3rd inning would become the youngest player to hit a grand slam in World Series history. The Cubs finished winning 9-2 with Anthony Rizzo hitting a 2 run home run in the 9th inning.

The Cubs forced a game 7, and it was a big game. The Cubs had Kyle Hendricks pitching while Cleveland had for the 3rd time Corey Kluber. The Cubs jumped on him early the 4th pitch of the game was a home run by Dexter Fowler. Cleveland tied the game later. The Cubs then regained the lead with a sac fly by Addison Russell, and a RBI double by Wilson Contreras would give the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

As the game went on, the Cubs struggling second baseman Javier Baez hit a solo home run making it 4-1 then a RBI single by Anthony Rizzo gave the Cubs a 5-1 lead, and everything looked great for the Cubs, until later.

Jon Lester, who came in the game in the 5th, gave up 2 runs on a wild pitch, but the inning after that, David Ross in his final game of his career became the oldest player to hit a solo home run in the World Series to make the game 6-3. The Cubs would take that lead into the 8th inning.

Then Aroldis Chapman would give up 3 runs in the 9th inning making the game tied 6-6. Then came a rian delay of 17 minuets making it the stress build up more.

The Cubs would get a single by Kyle Schwarber to start off, Albert Almora came in to run for him, after the intentally walked Antony Rizzo Ben Zobrist came to the plate.

He would hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Almora, then with the bases loaded Miguel Montero hit a single to score Rizzo. And give the Cubs the lead of 8-6 going into the bottom of the 10th.

Carl Edwards would get two outs then give up a run to make it 8-7, but then Mike Montgumery would come in. The game ended with Kris Bryant throwing the ball to anthony Rizzo, and giving the Cubs their first World Series in 108 years.

The Cubs would celebrate with Ben Zobrist as the mvp of the World Series, giving Chicago a championship long waited for. Which the city would celebrate witha parade the following friday.
