Knights keep Eagles from flying

After a 7-2 season the football team looks to carry that Friday night lights success into the playoffs.

North shaped up to face the Lakes Eagles in the first round of the playoffs on Friday night (October 28th).

With a high scoring first quarter thanks to a seventy yard run up the middle by North Running Back Dami Oladunmoye and a catch and 40 yard run by Wide Receiver Elliott “Bubba” Hochstein, the Knights stood tied 14-14 at the beginning of the Second quarter.

Success for North continued with a “bread basket” pass to Wide Receiver Cole West from sophomore quarter back Austin Martineau. North’s defense held the Eagles silent leading into halftime with North now leading the offensive-driven game 21-14.

Jeremiah Myles started the second half on the right foot with a key fumble recover halfway through the third quarter. This led to the first of two touchdowns for senior Running Back Griffin Gawenda with a muscled run up the middle into the endzone, North 28, Lakes, 14.

Lakes Wide Receiver Ryan Selig started the scoring frenzy of the fourth quarter with his second of two touchdowns with a 20 yard pass. Griffin Gawenda would answer back though with his second touchdown, a sixty-two yard, run up the middle, and have an even more impressive seventy nine yard run where he would be “apparently” tackled at the one yard line.

Peter Stanfel got the job done as he was brought in to brute through the Lakes defensive lineman after Gawenda’s run and picked up his first touchdown of the game.

This would prove to the the clincher for North especially after the tipped pass from Payton Campbell, that was caught by Ryan Bernstein at 2:00 in the fourth quarter. After North lined up in victory formation, all was over for the Lakes Eagles to soar any further into the playoffs. North 42, Lakes, 28.

North will be playing next at Cary-Grove against them on Saturday, November 5, at 1:00.
