Spanish Club Speaking Out

A high school has something new in the Spanish Club.

Spanish Club is an after school club for students eager to engage in more world language.

“Our first meeting for Spanish Club was on the first of September,” said world language teacher Ms. Gaona.

Ms. Gaona is the sponsor for the club and encourages her students to do activities and games to explore their Spanish experience.

It is very student led and we have a variety of activities like:  make papel picado, Loteria game day, Spanish movie night, Visit different restaurants, cooking days where we try a new recipe, celebrate holidays like Día de Los Muertos and get involved with other school events and many more, Goana said.

Students attend the club to gain more knowledgeable Spanish  as well as an in-depth look into Spanish cultures, as a regular world language class may not go into as much depth.

“It gives students the opportunity to get involved while learning about other Spanish speaking countries, said Goana.

Many of the Spain students visiting the school attended the club so that our students get an understanding of life in a foreign country.

Spanish Club started around 2010 and Ms. Gaona has been the teacher since the club began. The club in is in room number A154 and students attend  after school about twice a month for approximately 2 hours.

Ms. Gaona started the club so students could become confident in speaking and having a fluent conversation with others.

Spanish Club has around twenty or so students who sign up each year and are excited to become involved in new activities involving Spanish.

“Around 15 to 20 students attend the club,” Ms. Gaona said.

Spanish Club becomes newer and newer each year as new students enter and Ms. Gaona has more activities and games to get the students to focus on specific objectives.

GNHS wanted world language after-school clubs to give students the opportunity to have a bigger view on other countries cultures.

The Spanish Club has fulfilled many students influence throughout other cultures and many are willing to be informed  on other countries because the Spanish Club has given them enjoyment on countries other than the United States.
