Girls begin season with best time

The girls cross country team has started their season off with a great start by running at their best speed.
“The season is starting great as our girls team had their best finish in school’s history at the Lake County meet,” said assistant coach Matthew Zaluckyj.
Girls cross country meet every day at the school’s track with practice five days a week.
“For our warm-ups, we start by doing two laps on the track, which is quite awful. Then we do a lot of skips which are called A skips and B skips,” said senior Jacque Garza.
The meets that the girls have for cross country forces the girls to prepare themselves for what comes their way.
“(For a meet) I carb up the day before it. Also, I eat a bagel and a banana three hours before my meet. And I get into my race mood, just listening to music and not talking to anybody,” said senior Cindy Alcala.
The girls in cross country have their own definitions of what makes a person a good runner.
“What makes a good runner is someone who knows how to push their limits and is not scared to push themselves a little bit further. Also, for when someone is tired, that they don’t walk. Instead they do a steady jog, because it’s very important to never walk,” Garza said.
Not only do the girls in cross country want to be a part of the team, but so does the coach.
“I want to give back to a sport that made a big impact in my life,” Zaluckyj said.
