Science Olympiad prepares for competition

The Science Olympiad team qualified for the State tournament after their second place finish at Regionals last Saturday.
The State competition is at the University of Illinois on April 16.
“I’m so excited that all of the students’ hard work paid off and they achieved their goal of going to State,” said coach Jennifer Grutza.
The Science Olympiad team competes in many categories for each event.
“There are 23 different events that students are able to participate in including knowledge and/or lab based events like cell biology, anatomy, and chemistry lab. Students choose which events they would like to participate in,” said coach Megan Finn.
“Though the days start early and are long, most competition days are rewarding as the team placed in 10 different events at their invitational on Jan. 23. Zach Ravn and Billy Lay won first place in the Green Generation event. The team also took second in the Dynamic Planet event and the Game On event participated by Connor Bergman, Abby Hsiao, Ryan Sienes and Tyrell To,” Grutza said.
Science Olympiad builds off of a new wave of incoming middle school students.
“In addition, this year we have a big group of freshmen that have come from Grayslake Middle School. They are a very passionate group of students who are very motivated to succeed,” Finn said.
