December brings competition season for the cheerleading team.
“In the beginning of the fall season, we had Saturday practices. Then we would go to benefits on Sundays. Right now we practice every day after school and also weekends. This is all really worth it because going to State has to be the best feeling ever,” said sophomore Angelica Diaz.
The team practices every night after school to prepare for the competitions.
“We drill our stunts over and over again to make sure they are solid. We do our routine with certain things pulled out so that we can focus on certain skills, and we will all do it full out multiple times so we can perfect it,” Diaz said.
Going into competition can be really stressful and nerve racking for some of the girls, but every one of them have their own routines to calm their nerves down.
“Some girls need to be left alone to listen to music and calm themselves down. Some need a reminder on what they do well, and some need a motivational talk and a warm-up,” said coach Jennifer Garza
Spending so much time together as a team builds a stronger relationship with everyone.
“Our relationship as a team is pretty great. We have a group chat that we talk in all the time,” said senior Monica Myers.
The cheer team placed third at their first competition of the year and look to grow.
“I think this season, more than ever, I am just looking forward to seeing the team get out there and compete. We have been through a lot this year, and no matter if we win or lose, the fact that we have stuck together as a family and are able to get out there and compete- then we’ve already won in my book,” Garza said.
