It just so happened that the best field trip of the year landed on my birthday this year. October 17th to be exact. The KEMPA Journalism Fall conference is something I look forward to every year because I get to spend the whole day with my amazing newspaper staff at UW Whitewater. I had so much fun this year, and what made it even more exciting was the fact that it was on my 18th birthday.
The bus ride was long, but upon arrival, we were awarded 2nd place in the newspaper category. It was an exciting honor for us. After the opening ceremonies, the rest of the day consisted of class sessions and lunch. I decided to spend my day with my friends Ashley, Brandon, and Connor; Or the “squad” as we like to call ourselves. The “squad” even got to be on WWU TV! This was during our session for broadcast journalism. It was in an actual tv recording studio, and we were in charge of creating a newscast. After that session, we left campus for lunch. The “squad” decided to grab a bite at Pizza Hut, and might I say, the stuffed crust pizza is a must-have. We might’ve been just a little bit hungry considering we devoured a large pizza and 16 wings between the four of us.
After lunch, we made it back to campus in time to get frozen yogurt for dessert before the last session. But just as we got to the front of the froyo line, the machine stopped working. I was disappointed, but what made it better was that on our way to the last session we had a quick “squad” photo shoot.
All in all, the day was a success. You could say the day was exhausting because I had the best sleep of my life on the bus ride back to Illinois. I don’t think there was a better way to spend my 18th birthday, and I will never forget the memories I made this year.
