Tennis accomplishes goals, finishes season strong

The girls tennis team finished
the season on a high note:
with a winning record and a
team bond that will not be broken.
“We are a really dedicated
team. All of us have put in a lot
of time toward this team, and
we have all worked really hard.
Everyone wants to be at practices
and matches. With such a
dedicated team, it’s not hard to
be successful,” said senior Erin
Hendrix.
Even with the challenge of
moving new players into new
positions they hadn’t played in
before, the girls grew tremendously
as individuals and as a
team.
“Getting used to the lineup
was hard at first, but once
we got used to it, we started to
improve a lot. We were all really
comfortable now, and we know
what we have to do to win,”
Hendrix said.
The girls ended the season
with a winning record of 10 and
7 and a successful run at Conference
and Sectionals.
“Our biggest challenge this
year was that we lost all of our
starters from last year, so we
had big shoes to fill,” said varsity
tennis coach Jill Tomasello.
Although the girls work
hard and practice diligently,
they make sure to have fun too.
“We’re more like a family
than a team. All the girls get
along really well, and it’s important
that we all feel comfortable
with each other,” said senior
Cassie Freidman.
After this year, the tennis
program will be losing six
seniors, creating another challenge
that the new team will
work to overcome.
“Next year will be a challenge,
but as long as Coach
Tomasello works with the team
the same way we worked this
year, the team will be successful,”
Freidman said
Team captains Freidman
and Hendrix will be graduating
after this year but have
memories of tennis that will last
a lifetime.
“Tennis has taught me a
lot over the years. Most importantly,
tennis has taught
me that while winning is nice,
having fun is the most important
thing. Having fun is the
reason I started playing tennis
in the first place, so it is nice to
be reminded of that. You can’t
get caught up in winning all of
the time. You just need to go out
on the court and enjoy yourself,
play hard and do the best
