Senior Trever Carter took a mission trip to Haiti with his youth group this past summer to help reconstruct a playground and to interact with the children there.

Due to Carter’s strong desire to help others and his passionate attitude, he took a lot away from the experience. He’s looking to pursue a future in medicine in order to help children like the ones he visited. This trip has only confirmed what he wants in his future.

When Carter was in Haiti, he visited a rural community and had three days of vacation Bible school that included games, stories, arts and crafts. He was able to witness and experience a completely different lifestyle. Looking at Haiti in comparison to the places he’s seen was incredibly new to him.

“It was definitely a culture shock,” Carter said. “Haiti is a very rural area without many houses. Some were just sticks with tarps.”

While in Haiti, Carter was able to connect with a young boy named Bebatu. He was 13 years old, and although there was a language barrier, they were still able to make a connection.

“He even sought me out every day we were able to be there,” Carter said.

Haiti is extremely poor in comparison to the United States, and to Carter, was unlike anything he’d ever seen before.

“I definitely appreciate what I have a lot more,” Carter said.

Due to this trip, Carter’s views have definitely changed. He appreciates what he has a lot more and realizes that the world is much bigger than where he is.

Carter is looking forward to visiting Haiti again and to continue helping other in places that are less fortunate.
