Many clubs have been planning on donating to charities and holding holiday events to help people and other programs in need.
Overall, many ideas have been given for helping those in need for the holidays. Clubs are looking to not only stand out in giving back to people in need and the community, but also to help North get more and more recognized. This is seen by the Art Club raising money by selling cups with cookies and then donating money to the Avon Food Pantry. They did this at the Coffee House on Dec. 7.
“We will sell those, though, get a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, some cookies, and then they’ll be able to keep their cup. All the proceeds will go to Avon Food Pantry,” said art teacher Susan Foecking.
Students in these ceramics classes are excited to work hard every day to make their cups and focused on raising a good amount of money to donate it and help the Avon Food Pantry.
“One thing I love is that they come in and right away and they pull out their artwork. I didn’t even really have to ask them to be like, ‘Okay, guys, let’s get to work’,” Foecking said. “But another way that art can help those in need is if my artists and your student artists create something and donate it. We could have a fundraiser to help those in need in our community.”
There are many other ways aside from charities of giving back to the community. This is seen by looking at how PSP has recently visited honored veterans in the area by making them bracelets and giving them candy as well. Not only doing this but also visiting the Hillcrest Nursing Center in Round Lake and bringing joy to the senior citizens and handing out candy as well.
“We went into a retirement home, and we helped the elderly because some of them can’t really go out anymore. We’re helping out. We gave candy and also some pudding, and we like to help other communities as much as we can in different ways. I also think for Veterans Day, we’re planning to make bracelets and sending extra candy that we have to veterans,” said PSP member Diego Perez.
Members within PSP have enjoyed bringing joy to others and being able to notice the positive impact and differences they make to others in the community.
“My favorite part is knowing that I’m helping make a difference and seeing people happy. Whenever they started helping, I can see that people were happy I was making a bigger difference,” Perez said.
Many other ideas have been brought to celebrate the holidays, and this can be seen through Latinos Stand Up deciding to celebrate Day of the Dead and making altars and cookies around the school.
“We sold sugar skulls and we put up ofrendas and other ways to show recognition de los muertos,” said junior Sam Soriano.
Members of Latinos Stand Up are happy to have another successful event held such as others in the past which was visiting and publicizing about the National Museum of Mexican Art in Mexico.
“Mostly when we went out or last year we went to the Chicago Mexican Museum, and that was probably the best part of the club,” Soriano said.
