Valentine’s Day Today

Valentine’s Day originated for two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine to honor them with a feast. The earliest origin of the holiday being the pagan holiday Lupercalia, which was a festival that celebrated fertility. Over time, the celebration that is held on February 14 has evolved from religious origins to celebrating romance, even having birthdays on the day.

Valentine’s Day is a celebration focused on the relationship between couples, but it can be to show appreciation to friends as well.

“I think it’s to celebrate friendship because you love your friends,” said freshman, Joslin Rush.

There are different ways that single people can celebrate Valentine’s Day as well. They can use it as a day to appreciate and pamper themselves.

“They should buy themselves chocolate and some flowers maybe watch romcoms,” said sophomore, Bri Pagac.

Giving gifts to others is a traditional thing during the holiday to show love for a person. Receiving gifts can make someone feel special, happy along with other positive emotions.

“I got one in fourth grade. It was a box of chocolates and a cute little stuffed animal. It was really sweet,” Rush said.

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of romance, love, culture and religion in today’s society. There are varying opinions if a romantic gesture on Valentine’s Day means more than normally.

“I feel like yes, but at the same time, no because it’s a holiday. Everyone’s reminding you to do it. But also, it just lets you know that you’re appreciated,” said sophomore, Jace Annest.

Many people have different things they do for the holiday, ways they celebrate or if they don’t celebrate what they do.

“I typically sit alone with my mom and eat chocolates,” Pagac said.

It is typically believed that one gender celebrates the romantic day more than others. For various reasons women are seen to be more romantic than men. However research shows that men celebrate the day more because men face the pressure of buying a gift for their special som

eone.

“I think women celebrate Valentine’s Day more because in general, they’re a lot more romantic than guys, but I could be wrong. It’s just based on personal life experiences,” Annest said.
