Wrestling season starts strong

With winter sports starting, wrestling also starts with promising goals and wrestlers this season.

Wrestlers this year are much more motivated and more consistent compared to last. Coach Jim Kelly believes this is a key component to the team’s success this year.

“I can already tell you it’s noticeably different in the fact that like the wrestlers we have right now that are consistently in the room, we are not worried about them staying with us all season. Last year, we had some great athletes who are really strong in terms of the sport. They didn’t care enough, and then they didn’t stick with it. We’re not worried about that this year,” said Coach Jim Kelly.

Another reason Coach Kelly believes in this year’s wrestling team is due to teamwork and team building skill to help one another.

“This group gives us as coaches so many good feelings, good positive vibes because we can already see like, you guys are going to be the group that’s to be a good teammate to one another. You’re going to be respectful to the athletes and the coaches and the referees that you go up against and better than anything else because you can already tell you as you’re making friendships. You’re going to end up hopefully building up some relationships that stick with you beyond just this winter season,” Kelly said.

Girls wrestling is exciting this year due to new girls joining and returning stars like Julia and Vanessa making a difference in the mats.

“Like I’m not very different in terms of experience, and I might have had an opportunity to wrestle one of those girls. I might have had a match against one of those girls, and I scored a lot of points. I think they’re seeing that they have some potential to be one of those top girls in this year’s tournament,” Kelly said.
