Review: “Shang-Chi”

The movie “Shang-Chi” from Marvel Studios came out September 3, 2021. It was the first Marvel movie in over a decade to introduce a new character in a new setting.

The movie had tons of buzz when fans heard it was coming out, along with the fact that Simu Liu and Awkafina were starring in it. Fans didn’t know what to expect when the movie was announced and the trailer was released because it wasn’t hinted at by any actors or producers.

Though many fans were excited to see the movie, there were just as many trolls on the internet stirring up drama before the movie was released.

Many felt as if the movie wasn’t getting enough recognition and suggested it was because it was a movie of Asian culture. There were trolls saying the star of the movie, Simu Liu, was irrelevant or not good enough. Before the movie had even come out it was being heavily criticized. Social media influencers were also taking part in this debate before the release of the movie.

YouTubers were commenting on the movie based off of the little information given to them by those who work at Marvel Studios. A month ago, the YouTube video “Shang Chi Box office FLOP? Simu Liu calls out Youtubers” was put out by YouTuber The Lonely Banter.

“But it’s still one of the lowest MCU movies,” said The Lonely Banter.

“This is the biggest movie in the world right now, shattering records worldwide,” declared Jimmy Fallon during an interview with Simu.

The actors seemed to fit their new characters perfectly, and I feel as if people are accepting them into the MCU family. “Shang Chi” made 196.5 million dollars for the MCU, beating Universal film “F9,” and the new addition to the Disney plus family, “Black Widow.” This only proved all the internet trolls wrong and brought in more curious fans to watch the film. The latest Marvel film is now the highest-grossing domestic release of 2021.

As a Marvel fan, I can definitely say I hadn’t expected this movie to happen so soon. “Black Widow” had just come out right before, ending the phase of the original 5. I was excited to see the new movie because I hadn’t been able to predict what would happen.

The first scene was ominous and gave away no clues as to how great the movie would be in the end. The plot made sense and followed the correct timeline the producers at Marvel Studios had already set. I loved the involvement of Wong, master of magic and skilled martial artist from the movies “Doctor Strange 2016,” “Infinity War 2018,” and “Endgame 2019.”

I feel like the characters’ scene brought some comfort to the fans and helped make up for the fact that Stan Lee wasn’t able to do his usual cameo. Fans were cheering during his entrance along with when Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner made an appearance toward the end of the movie. The post credits scene was insane. The cliffhanger made fans roar with excitement, and I can’t wait for another movie.
Marvel did a fantastic job creating this masterpiece.
