Sophomore crowned Miss Avon Township

Sophomore Mariah Lieberman was recently crowned Teen Miss Avon Township. She will compete in the upcoming Teen Miss Lake County Pageant on November 13.

Lieberman competed in a preliminary pageant for the Teen Miss Lake County pageant and won the title of Teen Miss Avon Township. She will compete in various phases of competition against other preliminary titleholders, such as personal interview, speech, and evening gown.

“For us, dressing in our formal gown was optional. All of us chose to do it, but the fact that it was something we didn’t even have to do made it really different of an experience. Due to COVID-19, they didn’t want as many girls in the changing room if they could. But preparing for it was basically the same, just making sure I had my speech and was able to answer interview questions well. And with service, there’s not as many food pantry type of things that I am able to do,” Lieberman said.

Lieberman was one of two contestants competing for Teen Miss Avon Township in August. She competed in personal interview, speech, and evening gown. “My platform is on teaching fire safety and prevention since my house burned down last year,” Lieberman said.

Throughout pageant titleholders’ year of service, they promote a platform, which is a social issue or charity that they find important. For Lieberman, her platform is more than that. She lost her house and pets in a house fire last year and now she helps others avoid similar tragedies.

“I go to coaching every week with my director who used to be Miss Lake County and used to be Jr. Miss Lake County, but we are able to do practice on interview questions, my speech, getting the right inflection and everything,” Lieberman said.
