Review: The Outer Worlds
Become an interstellar colonist and expand humanity’s knowledge of the universe. Should you try to save the solar system you inhabit or fall alongside the rich?
The Outer Worlds is a great action RPG. There are many paths players can take not only along the main storyline but also in faction and companion questlines. It has great replayability thanks to its many diverse endings.
The Outer Worlds won a Nebula Award for game writing and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the makers of Fallout: New Vegas, which won many awards including RPG of the Year.
The player begins being saved by a seemingly crazy scientist named Phineas Welles. He drops the player off on an Earth-like planet in a struggling settlement. The player goes all around the solar system deciding who to side with and who to oppose. In the end, the player must decide how to save the Halcyon and everyone within it.
Near the beginning of the game, the player needs a power regulator to power their ship. They must decide which group to cut power to in order to get their power regulator. The decisions the player makes throughout the game change how they play in many ways.
The Outer Worlds is an amazing open-world RPG, with lots of interesting and fun missions and quests. It has many hours worth of very entertaining content as well as replayability, which many games lack. Like any game, though, The Outer Worlds does have some issues. Although most are fairly minor and do not impact most playthroughs, some are noticeable.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Outer Worlds. The one main issue is that certain play-styles, such as stealth, are fairly difficult compared to other more popular approaches. I would give this game an 8/10.
