COVID-19 impacts Halloween
The surge of COVID-19 cases in Illinois have made people question if it’s okay to hand out candy this Halloween.
According to the Village of Grayslake website, “All individuals participating in trick-or-treating, including those passing out candy should maintain social distance of at least 6 feet and wear proper face covering.”
People in different neighborhoods have had different ideas of what they feel comfortable doing this year while handing out candy.
“Yes absolutely I am worried about COVID, but I plan on handing out candy this year,” said Wagner, a resident of Lake Villa.
Other people though, are still trying to decide if handing out candy this year is a good idea for them and their family’s health.
“I haven’t decided yet. I’ve been watching the news to see if it’s okay and safe to do it with COVID going around,” said Maggie Snooks, a resident of Lake Villa.
There are also different ways that Grayslake residents are able to hand out candy to trick or treaters according to the Village of Grayslake website. The website says, “As an alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating, anyone who would like to distribute treats should leave individually wrapped candy or treats on a table.”
Most people in Lake Villa and Grayslake feel like that’s the best way to celebrate the holiday and still stay safe.
“I believe we’re going to to hand out individual treats and we’re going to put them on the end of the driveway and let the kids get them so we don’t come in contact,” said Paige, a resident of Lake Villa.
This is described to be the safest method when handing out candy to trick-or-treaters according to the CDC and Village of Grayslake because it has the least amount of contact between people.
According to the Village of Grayslake website, “Anyone distributing candy or treats should wash their hands properly for at least 20 seconds before placing the candy on the table and when replenishing. Gloves are recommended.”
The majority of people in both Lake Villa and Grayslake still see the safest way to not spread COVID-19 is to just leave the candy on the driveway.
“We are going to hand out candy, but I’ve been talking to my husband and we’re probably going to just leave a bowl outside, so we can’t come in contact,” said Lindsey, a resident of Lake Villa.
Since the pandemic cases are rising, most people know not to expect many trick-or-treaters this year and not a lot of houses to be handing out candy.
“I plan on having a small bowl if they come, but I’m not expecting much,” said Jeff, a resident of Lake Villa.
