The girls golf team has had a strong season competing in the NLCC this fall.

“The season has gone really well despite all the challenges and extra rules. Each girl on our team will have played in 4+ matches by the time our season is over. If you would’ve told me that would have happened at the beginning of the season, I would’ve said no way,” said assistant golf coach Brett Kay. “We’ve had 28 golfers on our team this year, and I believe we’ve done a good job of providing students with a meaningful experience despite what we’re going through right now. Overall, this season has been a huge success.”

 The season is progressing, but the rules are different. One major rule is that the athletes must wear a mask during practices and meets.

“Actually, we’ve been really good with wearing masks this season. At first, it was an adjustment and very strange, but I think we all know what could happen if we don’t follow the guideline,” Kay said.. “The last thing we wanted to have happen was have our season shut down because we weren’t wearing masks. The IHSA guidelines allowed for the girls to take off their masks when they were swinging or in the middle of a match, but honestly a lot of our girls still wear them because they’re used to it now.”

The team overall did not have any setbacks due to COVID-19. The only setbacks were weather-related.

“The only thing that canceled our events this year was the weather. Not once did we have any COVID-related scares. All of our girls did a phenomenal job of following our expectations and safety guidelines,” Kay said.

According to Kay, the number of athletes grew as more were able to join golf this fall. 

“The most successful part of the season was getting 28 girls, some of whom were beginning golfers, a meaningful sport experience when everything else has been shut down,” Kay said. “I’m thankful we were able to play our season this year and I’d say collectively, that’s the biggest win.”
