On Wednesday, January 29, the JV girls basketball team beat Round Lake 26 to 20. 

Winning this game was a good way to show the team’s improvement since the beginning of the season. 

“Our defence is what won us the game. We held them to 20 points. Anytime you can hold a team to 20 or less, you put yourself in a really good spot, just moving your feet playing good defence, talking to each other, making sure you get the rebound, and then running the offence. Whether the shots are falling or not, making sure we’re in the right spots and the shots will fall and something will open up” said JV coach Kelly Benton.

The JV girls team has lost two players recently due to injury, so winning this game was very important to the girls who couldn’t be there to play with them. Although defense is very important, so is offense. 

“When we went into Memphis (an offensive play) and we drove a lot, it created a bunch of opportunities for people to shoot. I think we adjusted very well. Coach changed up a lot of the offence, and we did very well with adjusting to it,” said Madeline Berrie, a JV player.

One major part of their victory is communication. Talking with one another on and off the court helps them become a better team. 

“I think communicating on the court (helped), not scrambling as much as we did in the beginning games,” said Jasmine Kemp, a JV player. Communication is one of the most important parts for the JV girls win.

To winning every game there are always things that stand out and were key to a win. Abbie Kukis, a JV player, said keys to winning were “Defense. Everything on defense we did. We were fast and we anticipated.” This is what led the JV girls team to a victory.
