Debate starts successful season
There were two competitions that the congressional Debate Team has attended over the past few weeks. They have won multiple awards in the past few weeks.
Members of the junior varsity, on October 23, had Jerry Lucas win best presiding officer award, Kate Uzelac and Abby Black-Mishaan win second and third place speaker awards, respectively.
“ Jerry Lucas, he’s a sophomore. He’s one of our new JV kids. He won a best presiding officer award at the first tournament he was able to do so,” said Dustin Zubert The best presiding officer determines which representative/speaker can go and runs the chamber. The best presiding officer receives the most points from all the speakers according to congressional debate laws.
With about 10 members on the team and only six going to tournaments, it is a stark contrast to other schools’ Debate Teams who have about 40 members. This makes research for the 9 bills being debated at each tournament a bit hard to do with so little able to research, according to Zubert.
“No one on the team is above a sophomore, so it’s definitely a learning year for us,” Zubert said.
