Swimmer represents North at Sectional competition

Junior Maya Haubrich represented North at the swimming sectional competition on Saturday November 10th.

North doesn’t have a swim team, but swimmers can compete for North at the sectional and state level. Junior Maya Haubrich has been swimming for North for her whole high school career, and she has also been swimming for Scout Aquatics, a club in Lake Forest.

“My coach, my brother, and my parents inspire me. My coach is always pushing me and challenging me, my brother still swims in college, which pushes me to continue the sport in the future, and my parents are always pushing me to my full potential,” Haubrich said.

Haubrich began swimming because it was very important to her family, and all of her siblings have competed. She continues to swim from the inspiration of her coach and family. She views the pool as a place of comfort, and with every day she aspires to get better no matter what. She trains for months leading up to her meets, and is mostly satisfied to see her time reflect her hard work. She can accomplish so much especially with the support of her coach, and she works hard alongside her to get even better at what she does.

“My coach, Carolyn Grevers, is someone I view as a big influence/parental figure. She’s very inspiring and successful, I have known her since I was seven years old, the pool and the people there are like my second family.” said Haubrich.

Haubrich’s events are backstroke, butterfly, and distance events. At the sectionals this season she competed in the 100 fly and the 200 free. She has also competed in Senior State and it was a very important meet for her. She performs to the best of her ability in every meet, and it pays off so much. At sectionals, Haubrich reached 9th in the 100 fly and 13th in the 200 free.

“I’m confident in my abilities, but I believe swimming is a sport that you cannot really be perfect at, there’s always something to improve upon; I’m always striving to do better,” said Haubrich.

Haubrich intends to continue her passion for as long as she can. With her family by her side, she will be able to swim for whatever school she chooses to go to.

“Swimming in college is a huge goal of mine, and I’ll continue to swim, maybe not competitively, for the rest of my life. It has had a very big impact.”
