National Honor Society inducts new members
National Honor Society (NHS) inducted 70 members on April 18. The students were inducted based on the qualities that define the NHS organization: scholarship, service, leadership, and character
The application process began with a invitation to students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4, but in order to gain admission, students had to demonstrate their commitment to service and leadership.
“All applications are reviewed by the faculty council,” said NHS sponsor Susan Remshak. “In order to show a commitment to service and leadership, students must have completed a minimum of ten service hours and ten leadership hours during their high school years. In addition, the faculty council works with the building administration to determine if students meet the character requirements.”
Once inducted, members are expected to complete the annual requirements of service, which consist of 20 hours of outside service and 40 hours of NHS events.
“NHS is not simply an honorary society,” Remshak said. “We are a working club that is dedicated to serving Grayslake and the surrounding communities. We strive to develop students that will continue to volunteer their time to community organizations long after they graduate. Service to others is our primary mission. As a matter of fact, our members logged 8,669 hours of community service this year alone.”
In order to meet these requirements, some NHS members recommend completing hours as soon as possible.
“If I could give advice to the new members, I would recommend getting your mandatory hours done as soon as possible so that you can volunteer for extra hours,” said 2018-2019 vice president junior Nicole Boxer. “Enjoy the experience and embrace the learning of how to be a leader and role model.”
According to Remshak, NHS not only benefits the community but also the individual student.
“There are many benefits of NHS membership,” Remshak said. “These include developing teamwork and leadership skills, learning to serve others, and developing a sense of fellowship. In addition, NHS students can apply for scholarships through NHS.”
