National Art Honor Society begins

National Art Honor Society (NAHS) began this year at North in hopes of emphasizing leadership and culture in the fine arts.

“NAHS is a nationwide recognition of students who have committed their time and talents to their artistic communities,” said sponsor Kelly Bott.

The sponsors wanted to start a society specifically for the fine arts as there are several honor societies for groups at school.

“NAHS takes art seriously. We have the opportunity to have leadership and service and all the things that are in the other honor societies. We can have those here too,” said sponsor Randy Sweitzer.

Some students in the fine arts are excited at this opportunity and cannot wait to get involved.

“I think that this is a club that will probably see a lot of growth in coming years, and it will be exciting to see it grow,” said senior Emma Ziegler.

NAHS has many goals for what they can do within the community and school.

“The goals of NAHS are really to bring the arts to the communities,” Bott said. “Here at North, we have a lot of vacant wall space that would benefit from murals and public sculpture. We also celebrate the art festival that brings the communities in so they can appreciate the arts and get hands on with things.

There’s a number of ways [to get connected with the community].”
Students who are interested in joining should contact the art teachers to understand how to participate and join the club.

“Really anybody who has an interest in helping bring artwork to the community has the opportunity to join,” Bott said. “[So far] we have run it so students who are in Art Club and have already been doing things where they are dedicating their time to the arts have been eligible. Everybody needs to acrew ten hours of art based service to the school or community and attend meetings in order to be able to join.”
