LSU (Latinos Stand Up) held the annual soccer tournament for the 10th year in a row on Feb. 15.

“We first advertised and put out permission slip packets for students and faculty to create teams of four, and they were all due by our meeting on that day,” said co-sponsor Cynthia Karabush.

While the game is going on, there are only three people per team allowed on the field at once. The fourth player is a substitute.

“We’ve been doing this for so long we have it down to a science,” Karabush said.

“The way we try to run it is like the World Cup. We put them into groups of three or four, and then we do a round robin where everyone is guaranteed to play three, seven minute games,” said co-sponsor Martin Rocha.

For each game played, the teams are able to score points to further their placement in the elimination part of the tournament. In the round robin, the winner of each game gets three points. If the game ends in a tie, both teams are awarded 2 points.

“This year we probably had the least amount of teams.We had a total of nine teams, so about 36 total players,” Rocha said

People are encouraged to come and watch the tournament.

“I love it when their families come to the games,” Rocha said.

The players who are on rest during the games were actively engaged in playing in the empty courts for almost the whole time that the event was going on.

“The LSU tournament is really fun and competitive, that’s why I have been participating in it,” said sophomore Jesus Aldana.
