Five wrestlers advance to Sectionals
With the winter season closing, the wrestlers are motivating each other in practices and meets to make it further into the upcoming IHSA competitions. Five wrestlers will take on Sectionals on Sat., February 10, hoping to advance wrestlers to State.
“The best feeling is when you beat a guy who was supposed to be the one pinning you during those six minutes,” said senior Zach McCauley. “Mentally pushing yourself to keep going when you’re completely out of energy is what makes [wrestling] so difficult.”
After State champion Joe Arroyo graduated last year, the team has been determined to remain strong within all the weight classes and win as many matches within their season.
“For my senior year, the one long term goal I’ve had this entire season is to make it to Sectionals and end my career on a high note. This sport has been a lot of fun because of the friendships I’ve made and the discipline it applies to my future,” said senior Michael Johnson.
The varsity team is very senior heavy this season, and for many individuals these last couple meets will be the last time they step foot on the mat competitively.
“These last four years have been really fun, but also extremely difficult. There’s been lots of happy moments, but also disappointments. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that the energy you exert determines the outcome. You have to put in the work during practice to excel,” McCauley said.
Although wrestling is physically demanding, many wrestlers focus on the mentality they have during their six minutes on the mat. Their attitude, to them, is just as vital as their strength and technique.
“The most difficult aspect of the sport is your mental game. If it’s not strong, your chances of being successful are low,” said junior Kyle Bosshart. “It’s a totally different sport because it can be a team sport, but if you mess up it’s all on you, which proposes great life skills.”
