Knowing the signs of mental illness helps students
Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental illnesses cause the brain to function differently. According to Everyday Health, many teens with mental illness consider themselves abnormal and don’t feel like they belong in society. These negative thoughts can cause low self esteem and self harm. Getting help is difficult for most people. Some are embarrassed or anxious about getting treatment. Most are scared that someone will say the wrong thing or give bad advice.
“Talking to a friend or family member is the first step to getting help. Talk to anyone you trust; you’ll feel more comfortable,” said English teacher Molly Tomlinson.
Knowing the signs of depression are difficult, but it they are important to recognize to be able to get help.
“Depression is relevant to talk about because it impacts everything you do and who you are as a person. Something as simple as taking a shower can suddenly become a difficult task. Depression distances someone from friends and family. It impacts your school life. This is why we need to talk about mental illness more,” said special education teacher Amy Slobodecki.
Mayo Clinic lists some signs of depression such as substance abuse, reckless behavior, loss of interest in activities, lack of concentration, lack of sleep, excessive hunger or loss of appetite, excessive crying, social isolation, change in behavior or change in appearance, and thoughts of self harm.
“Lots of people don’t treat mental illness like a disease. It is just as important as a physical illness,” said student assistance program coordinator Jenny Andersen.
Many things can cause depression, like physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, chemical imbalance, a loved one’s death, bullying, family issues, and others.
According to Mrs. Andersen, depression is treatable through lifestyle changes, therapy, and medicine.
“Sometimes, people can feel hopeless, but their is a lot of hope to feel better and options for treatment,” Andersen said.
Counselors and social workers are always available for students to go to for help when dealing with issues of depression. Depression is a mental illness caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Depression can also be triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. According to Fast Facts about Mental Illness, 80 percent of people who suffer from depression are not receiving help.
