Second year program continues to improve

After just getting settled into the new program, varsity coach Nikki Kirchway and junior varsity coach Jill Grunloh work together to prepare this year’s new boys volleyball team for victory. This is a second year program at the school.
“I’ve seen huge improvements from last year’s season, and I am excited to be a part of this program. Working with players outside of the classroom is what makes coaching these boys fun,” Grunloh said.
Even though the team lost conference games against Antioch, Lakes and North Chicago, they still work hard to keep up with their conference. Varsity player Nick Anello is the setter for the team.
“Working as a setter is hard because I have to run around everywhere while trying to set the perfect set for the plays we run,” Anello said.
The team practices their new plays like: quicks, 32s, and 31s to perfect them against opponents. Even though they struggle with getting it started, they keep practicing at it to make it good.
“Watching them work together and learn from their mistakes at practice is inspiring, and it definitely shows improvement throughout the year,” said varsity manager Taylor Johnston.
The team has many more games to come until the season comes to an end. With a conference record of 5-6, the boys hope to win their senior night game on May 10.
