Math Team competes in conference
Math Team is a competitive academic sport that consists of three to four competitions throughout the year. By practicing different math levels, the team has been successful in a recent individual competition against Grayslake Central High School.
Not having many students participate makes it difficult to win competitions against other schools with up to 50 members. Math Team consists of 15 members and meets weekly.
“Math Team is important because it’s a way to get involved and make some more friends regardless of your skill level,” said junior Nick Schnieder.
Schnieder is a returning member on the team. New members look up to him for advice and guidance. New members also look up to their coaches, Alexander DeGroh and Matthew Zaluckyj.
“Our strengths arrive from our returning students who step up to become leaders in the Math Team. They are always very helpful with the new Math Team members,” DeGroh said.
With competitions coming up fast, they have to study hard to improve upon their skills. They compete against Central every year as a tradition as a ‘Cross Town Meet.’
“After [the Central competition], our focus turns to our NLCC competition and our regional competition in February where we hope to qualify athletes for State,” Zaluckyj said.
Math Team just participated in the conference competition on January 26 at Round Lake High School. Even though they didn’t win, they hope to take students to State this year.
