Winter Guard qualifies for Championships
Winter Guard placed third at their Regional competition and are now continuing onto the The Midwest Color Guard Circuit Championships on April 2, in La Porte, Indiana.
The opportunity to go to the Midwest Color Guard Circuit Championships was no shock to the team and seemingly well deserved. The team’s theme is the called Semicolon Project.
“The project is about suicide and self-harm prevention. That’s where we got the idea for our show. A semicolon is used in a sentence that could end but doesn’t, which is a symbol of the project, a life that didn’t end. It means a lot to be doing something like this. It means so much to all of us, and we all care about this so much,” said captain Symantha Kehr.
The 18 members are extremely excited because their competition season goes about a month longer than usual.
“We have a competition March 19. We are super excited to be going to those,” Kehr said.
Like every team, Winter Guard has set high expectations for their team’s season and worked hard, day in and day out, preparing to achieve these goals.
“Our goals are to learn how things work through the Midwest Color Guard Circuit and to continue to improve at each performance. Of course, we also would like to place in the top five at Championships,” said coach Sarah Schrader.
Students can join Winter Guard, next November when the team hosts try-outs. Winter Guard is a welcoming sport that anyone can join and a place everyone is accepted.
“You don’t have to have any dance ability or be in band. You can just come to have fun and make new friends,” said sophomore Saige Spiers.
At the team’s last competition, on March 5, the team placed first out of six teams. This win was a confidence booster for the team as they get closer to the Championships.
“It was our coach’s birthday, so I think we gave her a great gift,” Spiers said.
Winter Guard looks to continue their winning streak on April 2.
