IPA honors two students
Every year two seniors are chosen to win the Principal’s Leadership Award on behalf of Dr. Roscoe for their excellence in leadership and community involvement.
Seniors Rebecca Watters and Shane Boyd were chosen this year to represent Grayslake North at the Vernon Hills reception of the Illinois Principal’s Association.
“Rebecca and Shane are leaders by their actions and what they do; people know who they are because of what they do and that sets them apart,” Roscoe said.
Many students from all over Lake County were given the award for various reasons. Students in graduating grades of their school were awarded by their principals.
“This award is meant to recognize outstanding leadership skills in and outside of school,” Roscoe said.
Aside from being recognized by their principal, recipients of the award learned about themselves through the process.
“It made me feel honored that I have been recognized for the work I do on a daily basis that comes as second nature to me,” Watters said.
Aside from excelling in academics, Boyd and Watters are both active in clubs and activities such as Journalism and FBLA.
“I felt honored that Dr. Roscoe chose me, as I’m no valedictorian, but I love to stay involved and help head many activities at North,” Boyd said.
This award honors students for their leadership skills and will help them develop these skills in the future.
“This award has taught me that I can continue being a leader throughout college and in my future job,” Watters said.
Watters plans to major in education at the University of Kentucky and Boyd will attend Purdue University to study business management.
“This class tends to be doers. We don’t have the student that speaks about leadership; we have the students that take action,” Roscoe said
Watters and Boyd will take the skills they’ve learned throughout high school and continue applying their leadership skills to all they do.
“I hope to apply the leadership abilities I have accumulated through high school to find success in college as well,” Boyd said.
