Ground stroke, volley, overhead – the tennis team is hitting it off at the beginning of the season. With a record of 9-3, the girls are developing sharper skills and closer relationships.
Coached by Kate Cole, the Knights are adapting to a new season with a new coach. Despite any adversity, the team is still meeting their goals with the help of captains Robyn George, Briana Pagac, and Anya Dinkla.
“It’s been a struggle at first getting to know her and then trying to get to know her coaching,” said George. “I think we’re getting along and figuring out what we need to make her happy and vice versa.”
One of Pagac’s season goals is to beat cross-town rival Grayslake Central, which was recently achieved.
The match was intensely tied up 3-3 after first doubles, second doubles, and second singles gained the dub. George’s match was the deciding factor of a Knight win or loss. After splitting the sets and playing a super tie breaker, she came out victorious, and the team celebrated another victory.
The cross-town rivalry continued as the girls headed into the first tournament of the season, the Ram-Knight hosted Tournament. With singles being held at Grayslake Central, and the doubles being held at Grayslake North, the girls hoped for another win.
After a long day of rallies, the numbers came out in favor of the Knights and they took home their medals. Outside the efforts, the girls celebrated their dedication over team dinners hosted by different families on the team almost every week, which is something new to the tennis team this year.
“It’s a time for people to bond and get together and have fun,” said Pagac. “It grows their friendships outside of the courts.”
The girls hope their hard work and the close bonds continue to pay off throughout the season and at the conference tournament soon to come.
