On Tuesday, Feb. 6, the Special Olympics basketball team hosted a staff vs. athletes basketball game. They will have their first alumni basketball game a few weeks later on Feb. 29, for which Special Olympics athletes from the past were invited to play against current athletes.
In terms of basketball, there are three athletes that qualified for State, with these three being Emmitt McConville, Giovanni Arrieta, and Shawn Hinrichs. On March 9, they will be competing against other Special Olympics athletes in Illinois at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.
“Our athletes have done a great job working together and supporting each other on and off the basketball court. Sportsmanship has been something that we’ve seen a lot of throughout this basketball season, and Coach Vazquez and I are very proud of that,” said Special Olympics coach Jenny Sparks.
However, The Big Game, which is scheduled for March 1, is what they benefit from the most. They are currently getting ready for it. There will be an assembly schedule used that day, and the assembly will feature the game.
“I am 110 percent confident in this team and the leadership that we have. We have a great group,” said Special Olympics coach Yolanda Vazquez.
