The Academic Team is one of the most challenging and talented teams to be part of at North. The team has worked very hard this year to improve their skills and knowledge.
“We’ve had some really close matches, and we’ve had some blowouts. But there’s been teams that we’ve lost to, then beat, and then vice versa,” said co-sponsor and English teacher Pat Green.
The Academic Team gives students a chance to showcase their talents, answering questions and working together to solve problems.
“I like how being smart can also be competitive in a positive way, so kids that know really obscure or really unusual knowledge have the ability to kind of show that off,” Green said.
The team is always looking to add more students because the more brains the team has, the more success they achieve. The questions can vary between many different topics, which makes it better to have more students because if there’s a question someone doesn’t know, someone else on the team can help answer.
“There’s a wide range of trivia in it, covering everything from Shrek to questions about coral. If you can think of it, we’ve probably had a question related to it,” said junior Malia Mei Nells.
Having the opportunity to learn different topics that aren’t covered at school is a great way to learn new things, especially from peers.
“Honestly, meeting new people and gaining knowledge that isn’t covered in school is what I enjoy about the Acedemic Team,” said junior Steven Radcliff.
In the Academic Team, there are matches where both teamwork and individual participation exist.
Though the Academic Team can be recieved as a team for academically skilled students, they accept everyone to join if they love trivia and enjoy getting to learn new things .
“People often believe you can only participate if you’re ‘smart,’ but the truth is, any interests or knowledge—whether it’s about video games, music artists, animals, etc.—are valuable on the team. There are questions about everything,” Nells said.
