The Student Council has been running Holiday Help for ten years now. It starts in October and ends on December 15. That evening, 53 students go shopping at Meijer with the help of six staff members for the toys and winter gear that people have asked for.
Holiday Help is based on donations. Parents, sports programs, and teachers can donate to help these families in need. It is an opportunity to help others.
“So starting in October [or] November, we start collecting information about families who are in need during the holiday season. So we get all of the family information together; we get their lists. We start raising money to help fund the shopping, and then the Student Council students collect wrapping paper, bows, etc. We go shopping. We bring it back. We wrap it, and the families pick up their items,” said Keeley Naughton, activities director.
This is something the students really enjoy. They have dinner together in the cafeteria and then go on buses to Meijer to shop for families. They also wrap the presents.
“I think that’s their favorite part,” said Student Council sponsor AshleyKopecky.
From a student perspective, senior Lola Brama has been in Student Council since seventh grade and really enjoys Student Council in general. Holiday Help is something she had a lot of positive things to say about.
“I enjoy that we’re able to volunteer and donate different items and volunteer our time to the different families in need,” Brama said.
