PSP, Best Buddies visit Feed My Starving Children
In order to help give back to the community, the Grayslake North Best Buddies chapter, along with PSP and students from Avon, attended Feed My Starving Children on April 16th.
“Working as a team to give back to the greater good of children in need- knowing we are helping children all around the country and not just helping out at GNHS or even within Grayslake was the best part of going on the trip,” said Best Buddies sponsor Amy Slobodecki.
FMSC is a nonprofit organization that operates completely off of volunteers and donations to provide food for malnourished children in third world countries.
“I thought it was interesting because we knew which countries we were sending the food to. We also prayed for the food and the safety of the children overseas, so it felt very fulfilling, “said Best Buddies president and junior David Graham.
Students from Best Buddies, PSP, and Avon Elementary School students were divided into groups who worked on an assembly line to create packets of food contents that contributed to the total shipments they made the whole day.
“Students worked in small groups or teams, and they were able to bond with their buddies as well as be role models for students from Avon School. The various groups helped promote friendships and working together for the good of the group,” Slobodecki said.
Sixteen Best Buddies members attended the trip, successfully donating to eight different countries.
“It was a great experience to go to Feed My Starving Children and being able to do it with all of the buddies, I loved it so much and I can’t wait to do it again,” said junior Brittney Carrillo.
The trip to Feed My Starving Children was an opportunity for Best Buddies to experience a field trip as well as what it was like to give to people who are less fortunate than them.
“The experience overall helped to bring a lot of the members in Best Buddies closer together, because we had to all work together in order to create the food for the children. It was also nice because it allowed us as a whole club to give back to people who are less fortunate than us,” Graham said.
