Academic help for students offered at North

Students can find academic help at one of the many tables around North.

Grayslake North offers many academic assistance programs for students.

Knight Support (formerly known as ARC) is the new system for providing academic help for students. Students can meet with teachers during their Knights Block. There is also SWAT tutoring which is when other students tutor students for their classes. There also is AIM, a team of teachers and staff members who provide support in literacy, numeracy, and executive functioning. There are also plenty of teachers throughout the school to help with students’ questions.

“The first one is Knight Support which students can sign up for to get help from teachers on their off hours,” said teacher Jennifer Rich.

It’s not hard to get help. Many students may get nervous asking questions to receive help. During Knight Support appointments, students receive one-to-one help. In AIM, teachers work with students one-to-one and in small groups. SWAT appointments are also typically one-to-one. Students can simply just set up an appointment to receive academic help with a teacher or a SWAT tutor.

“Students can make Knight Support appointments and see a list of teachers and locations by scanning the QR codes on the ‘GNHS Knight Support’ posters, which are displayed in classrooms and on the info wall outside the cafeteria. They can also access the appointment site by going on the school website and clicking the link for ‘Academic Help’,” said coordinator Jack LaBelle.

In every hallway, there are spots where teachers will be to help tutor students. There are also many locations in the library where students can receive this help.
The newest way for students to get help is Structured Knights Block. Structured Knights Block is a new support system this year. For Structured Knights Block, students do not sign up; they are automatically signed up if any of their grades are an F in any class, even P.E.

“Once they raise those grades to at least 70 percent, they can exit from the program. During Structured Knights Block, students have time to get work done, get help from Structured Knights Block teachers, or get help through Knight Support appointments,” LaBelle said.
