Wrestlers compete in quad meet at Cary Grove High School

The wrestlers competed at a quad meet at Cary Grove High School on December 4, 2021.

The varsity wrestling team had a good performance at the quad meet at Cary Grove High School on Saturday, December 4.

They had JV wrestlers wrestle at a varsity level because over half the varsity lineup is out due to COVID.

“I won two and I lost one. There are some things I wish I could have done better, but I can just make those adjustments for the next meet,” said senior varsity 152 lb Alex Carbajal.

The team needs to work on being there for each other, and they need to be overall more supportive. This means they need to be engaged when their teammates are wrestling.

“Being there for each other and helping each other when we need it, some wrestlers know more stuff than other wrestlers, so it’s nice to see the older guys help the younger guys,” Carbajal said

One of the JV wrestlers, Max Krieger, stepped up to go varsity at 138 lbs, and he did very well against other school’s varsity wrestlers and won one of his matches.

“I think Max Krieger stood out the most. It was his first match on varsity and he kept fighting and he ended up winning,” Carbajal said.

Another first-time varsity wrestler, Drake Runyon, had a great performance. He stood out because he never stopped fighting even when he got taken down.

“Drake had really good matches, and he tried really hard. It was his first time wrestling varsity guys,” Krieger said.

Now that over half the team is shut down due to COVID, the older guys have to work hard to make sure the younger guys come to practice and still get a workout in.

“It’s a bit weird because now I am considered a better older guy, and that has never happened,” Krieger said.

The best thing about wrestling is that even with a loss you can learn.

“My favorite thing about wrestling is that sometimes a loss is better than a win because you can learn more from a loss,” Krieger said.
